It played a pivotal role in toppling the iron-fisted rule of Mubarak, Egypt\u2019s long-standing authoritarian leader. However, it now finds itself under the control of a new authoritarian regime led by President el-Sisi. Perceiving civil society as a potential threat, the el-Sisi regime is resolute in its efforts to exert tight control. Rather than relying solely on overtly oppressive measures, the regime has developed various strategies to suppress civil society while simultaneously reinforcing its legitimacy. This study examines how the el-Sisi regime seeks to control civil society and sustain its legitimacy.
